What is Cholesterol?

A yellowish fatty substance that is present in our body is called as Cholestrol. Though in some way it is essential to our body, it is mainly remembered as the main source to cause heart disease. A person having high blood cholesterol is most likely prone to be a victim of potential heart attack or a stroke. Liver is the main producer of most of the cholesterol found in the body. The food we eat easily constitutes about 20-30 percent of cholesterol intake in our body.


Cholesterol is measured in milligrams per 100 millimetres of blood. The normal level of cholesterol present in our body varies between 150 - 200 mg per 100 ml.


What are Lipoproteins

Cholesterol occurs in combination with certain lipids (fats) in blood. This is called as lipoproteins.
There are two main types of lipoproteins present in our body. They are

LDL - a low density one and
HDL - a high density one

The low density lipoprotein is the one which is considered harmful to our body and is mainly associated with cholesterol being deposited in blood vessels.
If the level of LDL in total cholesterol is high, the greater will be the risk of arterial damage and heart disease. In short, greater the level of LDL to the total cholesterol, the greater will be the risk of arterial damage and heart disease.
On the other hand, HDL is good to our body as it removes cholesterol from circulation and inturn helps to reduce the risk of heart disease.


Main causes of HyperCholesterolaemia

Hereditary

Increase in cholesterol (known as Hypercholesterolaemia), is mainly known as a hereditary disorder.

Excessive consumption of cholesterol rich foods

1. Excess intake of fried foods
2. Excessive consumption of milk and its products are main causes of increase
in cholesterol in our body.

Butter, cream, sugar, cakes, pastries, biscuits, cheese, ice cream and non-vegetarian foods like meat, fish, and eggs are also major source of cholesterol increasing foods.

Other Causes

1. Smoking
2. Drinking and
3. Stress are the other major causes of increase in cholesterol in our body.
